The European Academy of Sciences (EurASc) is pleased to highlight the publication of the new Scientific Opinion on Advanced Materials, released in April 2026 under the European Commission’s Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM). The report provides strategic recommendations to support the forthcoming Advanced Materials Act, a key European initiative aimed at strengthening innovation, sustainability, industrial competitiveness, and technological autonomy across Europe.

The Scientific Opinion and the accompanying SAPEA Evidence Review Report emphasise the central role of advanced materials in critical sectors such as energy, electronics, health, mobility, aerospace, and sustainable manufacturing. The documents outline the need for stronger European data infrastructures, AI-assisted materials discovery, circular supply chains, and coordinated research-to-market ecosystems to ensure Europe’s long-term resilience and competitiveness.

EurASc is particularly proud that its President, Prof. Rodrigo Martins, contributed directly to the development of these strategic documents as a member of the SAPEA Working Group on Advanced Materials. His participation reflects both the Academy’s strong engagement with European science policy and its longstanding leadership in the field of advanced materials research.

Prof. Rodrigo Martins is internationally recognised for his pioneering work in advanced materials, transparent electronics, paper electronics, and sustainable technologies, having contributed extensively to European research and innovation strategies in this field.

The publication represents an important milestone in shaping future European policies on advanced materials and highlights the growing importance of scientific advice in supporting evidence-based policymaking at European level.

The full Scientific Opinion and Evidence Review Report are available online through the Scientific Advice Mechanism platform. Scientific Advice Mechanism – Advanced Materials

The European Academy of Sciences mourns the passing of Manfred T. Reetz, an outstanding scientist and internationally renowned pioneer in organic chemistry and biocatalysis, who passed away on 23 April 2026 following illness.

Prof. Reetz became a Member of the European Academy of Sciences in 2020 and was also awarded the prestigious Blaise Pascal Medal in Chemistry 2020 in recognition of his transformative scientific contributions to the field.

Over the course of an exceptional career, Prof. Reetz profoundly shaped modern organic chemistry through pioneering work spanning organometallic chemistry, asymmetric synthesis, and, most notably, directed evolution and biocatalysis. His groundbreaking research established biological evolution as a powerful tool for improving enzyme performance in stereoselective organic synthesis, opening entirely new pathways for sustainable and highly efficient chemical transformations.

Following studies in the United States and doctoral work at the University of Göttingen, Prof. Reetz developed an internationally celebrated academic career that culminated in his appointment as Director of the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research in Mülheim an der Ruhr, where he served from 1991 to 2011. Under his leadership, the institute further strengthened its position as a global centre of excellence in chemical research.

Prof. Reetz authored a remarkable scientific legacy and trained generations of researchers who continue to influence chemistry worldwide. His work earned numerous prestigious distinctions, including the Karl Ziegler Prize, the Otto Hahn Prize, and most recently the Ryoji Noyori Award in 2025.

Beyond his scientific achievements, Prof. Reetz was widely respected for his dedication to the scientific community, his mentorship, and his visionary approach to research and innovation.

The European Academy of Sciences extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and former students. His passing represents a profound loss for the international scientific community and particularly for the Chemistry Division of EurASc.

Prof. Manfred T. Reetz will be remembered as one of the defining figures of modern chemistry, whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations of scientists.

The European Academy of Sciences (EurASc) is proud to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Prof. Omar M. Yaghi, Fellow of the Academy, who has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Yaghi, Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley (USA), shares the Nobel Prize with Prof. Susumu Kitagawa (Kyoto University, Japan) and Prof. Richard Robson (University of Melbourne, Australia)for their development of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) — a revolutionary class of crystalline materials that combine metal ions with organic molecules to form porous structures with extraordinary versatility.

These molecular architectures, described by the Nobel Committee as “rooms for chemistry”, enable gases and other substances to flow through interconnected cavities. Their design allows scientists to capture carbon dioxide, harvest water from desert air, store toxic gases, and catalyse chemical reactions — creating a new generation of functional materials with applications in energy, environment, and sustainable technology.

The Nobel Committee highlighted that this discovery has “brought previously unforeseen opportunities for custom-made materials with new functions”, underscoring the transformative impact of Prof. Yaghi’s work on modern chemistry and materials science.

Prof. Yaghi, born in Amman (Jordan) and holding a PhD from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (1990), is internationally recognised as one of the founders of reticular chemistry, which has reshaped the way scientists design materials at the molecular level. His long-standing contributions continue to influence research across chemistry, physics, and engineering, inspiring global collaborations — including within the EurASc community.

EurASc warmly congratulates Prof. Omar M. Yaghi on this historic and well-deserved recognition, which honours his visionary leadership and lifelong dedication to advancing science for the benefit of society.
