Prof. Hanne Andersen - Denmark

Prof. Hanne Andersen is Professor of Philosophy of Science and Head of the Section for History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Her research explores the structure and dynamics of scientific change, with particular focus on the philosophy of interdisciplinary science, scientific collaboration, and the epistemology of scientific practices. She is internationally recognised for bridging philosophy of science with cognitive science and science studies.
Prof. Andersen has authored influential works on theories of scientific concepts, collaborative research, and the development of scientific knowledge, including the co-authored monograph The Cognitive Structure of Scientific Revolutions. She is also active in research policy and higher education, contributing to initiatives on responsible research practices and scientific integrity.
She has held several academic leadership roles and serves on editorial boards of leading journals in philosophy and science studies. Her work has been widely cited and has shaped the international discourse on the philosophy of science in practice.
Prof. Hanne Andersen has served as Head of the Division of Social Sciences and Humanitiesacross two roles: first as Officer from March 2019 to February 2022, extended until April 2024 due to the COVID-19 pandemic; and currently as Head of Division for the term December 2024 – November 2027 (first mandate as Head, in accordance with the EurASc Bylaws).

Prof. Georges Van Den Abbeele - United States

Prof. Georges Van Den Abbeele is a distinguished scholar of the humanities and social thought based in the United States, with an academic career across prestigious institutions including UC Davis, Northeastern University, UC Santa Cruz, and Brown University. His interdisciplinary research spans continental philosophy, literary and cultural theory, and political thought, with influential work on travel narratives, French theory, and the role of the humanities in contemporary society.
He is the author of numerous scholarly articles and books, including the widely cited Travel as Metaphor, as well as translations and critical editions of major French theorists. Prof. Van Den Abbeele is also recognised for his leadership in higher education, having held several academic administrative roles promoting strategic development in the humanities and the integration of cross-disciplinary knowledge.
Prof. Van Den Abbeele was awarded the 2008 Blaise Pascal Medal in Social Sciences and Humanities in recognition of his groundbreaking contributions to the philosophy of travel, critical theory, and the understanding of cultural identity and global discourse in the modern world.
Prof. Georges Van Den Abbeele has served as Officer of the Social Sciences and Humanities Division across three mandates: March 2016 – February 2019; March 2019 – February 2022, extended until April 2024 due to the COVID-19 pandemic; and December 2024 – November 2027 (current and final consecutive term, in accordance with the EurASc Bylaws).

Prof. Karine Chemla - France

Prof. Karine Chemla is Director of Research (classe exceptionnelle) at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and affiliated with the Université de Paris. She is an internationally acclaimed historian of mathematics, known especially for her groundbreaking work on the history of mathematics in ancient China and the transmission and transformation of mathematical knowledge across cultures.
Her research explores the production of knowledge in a global and historical perspective, with a focus on ancient texts, epistemology, and comparative approaches to mathematical reasoning. She has led major international projects and is recognised for her methodological innovations in the history of science and intercultural studies.
Prof. Chemla is a member of multiple academies, including the Academia Europaea and the European Academy of Sciences (EurASc). Her scholarly contributions have been honoured with numerous international distinctions and invited lectureships worldwide.

Prof. Kärin Nickelsen- Germany
Ludwig Maximilians University Munich (LMU)
Prof. Kärin Nickelsen is Professor of History of Science at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich (LMU Munich), Germany. Her research focuses on the history of the life sciences, particularly plant physiology, photosynthesis research, and the interplay between biology and technology in the 20th century. She is widely recognised for her contributions to the understanding of scientific practice, visual representation, and the role of models and experimentation in the development of knowledge.
Prof. Nickelsen has authored numerous influential books and articles on the epistemology and history of modern science, and has led several interdisciplinary research projects. Her work is noted for bridging historical scholarship with philosophy of science, contributing significantly to the historiography of systems biology and molecular life sciences.
She is a member of several academic bodies and serves on editorial boards of leading journals in history and philosophy of science.

Prof. Mauro Dorato - Italy
Roma Tre University
Prof. Mauro Dorato is Professor of Philosophy of Science at the University of Rome Tre, where he has held the chair in Philosophy of Science since 2001. He earned his PhD in Philosophy from Johns Hopkins University (1992), after graduating in Philosophy (1982) and Mathematics (1993) from the University of Rome “La Sapienza”.
His research focuses on the intersection between physics and metaphysics, with special emphasis on the nature of time, causality, determinism, and the interpretation of quantum mechanics. He is also engaged in exploring the philosophical foundations of scientific methodology and its implications for representative democracy. He has authored numerous volumes and scholarly articles in leading international journals.
Prof. Dorato served as President of the Italian Society for Logic, History and Philosophy of Science (2014–2017), and as Co-editor of the European Journal for Philosophy of Science (2011–2017). He is a member of several prestigious academic bodies, including the Academia Europaea, the Académie Internationale de Philosophie des Sciences, and the John Bell Institute.
