Gianluca Maria Farinola (PhD 1997) is Full Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Chemistry Department of University of Bari and Adjunct Professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Tufts University (Medford, Boston, USA). He is the President of Società Chimica Italiana (2023-2025) and he served as the President of the Organic Chemistry Divisions of SCI (2017-2019) and of EuChemS (2018-2021). He is Pro-rector for research and innovation at the University of Bari since 2019.
He has been visiting researcher at the University of Muenster, Germany (2009), invited visiting professor at the University of Strasbourg , France (Institut de Science et d’Ingégnerie Supramoléculaire – ISIS) (2013 and 2014) and at the University of Angers and CNRS, France (2015), visiting scholar at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Tufts University, US (2017 and 2018) - where he was appointed as Adjunct Professor in 2019- and visiting professor at the University of Paris Cite in 2024.
He has been a member of the Scientific Committee of the Department of Chemical Sciences and Materials Technology of the CNR (Italian National Research Council) (2016-2018) and Consultant of the Italian Parliamentary Commettee - Commissione Parlamentare Bicamerale Camera dei Deputati / Senato della Repubblica Italiana. He is member of the Chemistry Europe Council, Chemistry Europe Fellow since 2019, and member of the Istituto Lombardo Accademia di Scienze e Lettere.
He has been awarded the “Innovation in Organic Synthesis Award” of Interuniversitary Consortium CINMPIS and the “Medaglia Ciamician” prize of the Italian Chemical Society for young researchers Farinola is author of over 220 publications (ORCID ID 0000-0002-1601-2810) on international peer-reviewed journals (Scopus H-index 42, 7100 citations, Google Scholar H-index 46, 8000 citations), several international patents, and six book chapters. He has presented more than 120 invited lectures in national and international conferences, Universities and Research Institutes.
He is presently coordinating a research group of about 20 people at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Bari “Aldo Moro”. Gianluca Farinola research interests are very broad with a specific focus on sustainable synthesis of multifunctional molecular, polymeric and supramolecular photo/electro-active organic
materials for applications ranging from photonics and (opto)electronics to biology. Besides development of organometallic routes to molecular and polymeric organic semiconductors, his more recent studies are focused on exploring the concept of living materials, such as photosynthetic microorganisms or intact living cells interfaced with optoelectronic devices using biocompatible interfaces.
