Dr. Jin-Song von Storch is a senior scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology.

She earned her Ph.D. from University of Hamburg. She began her scientific career by investigating climate variability, focusing not only on specific modes such as the El Niño–Southern Oscillation, but also on broader conceptual frameworks for understanding variability. Her interests later shifted to physical oceanography, where she worked on quantifying and understanding how small-scale energetic features—such as mesoscale
eddies and internal tides—influence large-scale ocean circulation. A central theme in this work is the oceanic energy pathway: how energy, introduced at large scales through surface forcing, cascades through the ocean interior and is ultimately dissipated by small-scale turbulence. More recently, she has returned to climate variability, aiming to develop a more unified understanding of a broad class of variability phenomena that arise not only in the atmosphere and ocean but also in other complex physical systems.

Dr. Jin-Song von Storch is a professor at the university of Hamburg and a distinguished guest professor at IAP (Institute of Atmospheric Physics), Chinese Academy of Sciences.

She is a member of Zonta Club Hamburg.
