About the Webinar

In an era marked by rapid technological transformation, climate pressures, and increasing global inequalities, science must not only advance knowledge, but also deliver impact.

This presentation will explore how UNESCO is mobilising science as a global public good, bridging disciplines, regions, and stakeholders to address complex challenges.

Building on flagship initiatives such as the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (IDSSD), the Global Quantum Initiative, and emerging efforts such as Science in Crisis, the talk will highlight how UNESCO is shaping new models of international scientific cooperation—more inclusive, mission-driven, and responsive to societal needs.

The presentation will examine how basic sciences, engineering, and innovation can be leveraged to strengthen resilience, support evidence-based policymaking, and foster equitable access to emerging technologies, particularly in the Global South.

It will also reflect on the importance of connecting science to diplomacy, capacity building, and long-term development strategies.

Ultimately, the talk will argue that the future of science lies not only in discovery, but in our collective ability to organise it—across borders, sectors, and disciplines—for the benefit of all.

About the Speaker

Dr. Amal Kasry is Chief of Section for Research, Innovation and Engineering in the Natural Sciences Sector at UNESCO, where she leads global programmes in basic sciences and engineering capacity development. She has designed and delivered major international initiatives, including the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (2024–2033) and global programmes in quantum science and basic sciences for sustainability.

Prior to UNESCO, she was an internationally recognised materials scientist and nanobiotechnology researcher, with positions at leading institutions including the Max Planck Institute, IBM Research, and the Austrian Institute of Technology. She has authored over 60 scientific publications and holds multiple patents in advanced materials and biosensing technologies.

About the Webinar

Global peace is increasingly under strain as the world enters a turbulent era marked by growing geopolitical rivalry and weakening international cooperation. Armed conflicts and humanitarian crises are rising in many regions, while the accelerating climate crisis is intensifying resource scarcity, displacement, and instability. At the same time, global health threats, from pandemics to fragile health systems in conflict-affected regions, continue to expose deep inequalities and governance gaps.

Compounding these challenges is the growing rise of far-right politics and democratic backsliding in many parts of the world, which undermines international cooperation, fuels polarization, and weakens institutions designed to safeguard peace and human rights.

Addressing these interconnected crises requires stronger collaboration between science, policy, and society, and a renewed commitment to multilateral solutions that prioritize human security, sustainability, and democratic values.
