En (Evan) Ma is currently a professor at the Center for Alloy Innovation and Design (CAID), State Key Laboratory for Mechanical Behavior of Materials, Xi’an Jiaotong University in China, after retiring from the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) in 2020. Dr. Ma received his degrees from Tsinghua University, and worked at Caltech, MIT/IBM, University of Michigan, and University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, before becoming an assistant professor at Louisiana State University in 1993. He was an associate professor and then tenured professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University between 1998 and 2020. Prof. Ma’s research interest in recent years focuses on metastable alloys, including metallic glasses, nanostructured metals, chalcogenide phase-change materials for memory applications, multi-principal element high-entropy alloys, mechanical properties and plasticity mechanisms, and thermodynamics/kinetics of phase transformations. As of 2025, Dr. Ma has published approximately 430 archival papers, including over 30 in Science, Nature, and Nature Materials. His publications have received more than 66,000 citations (Google Scholars) with an h index = 129. Dr. Ma has presented ~160 invited/plenary talks at international conferences, as well as another ~110 seminars at academic institutions. Prof. Ma is an elected Fellow of the Materials Research Society (MRS), ASM International, the American Physical Society (APS), and TMS.
