Prof. Jan S. Hesthaven is Provost and Professor of Mathematics at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. After receiving his PhD in 1995 from the Technical University of Denmark, he joined Brown University</strong), USA, where he became Professor of Applied Mathematics in 2005. In 2013, he moved to EPFL as Chair of Computational Mathematics and Simulation Science and served as Dean of the School of Basic Sciences from 2017 to 2020. Since 2021, he serves as Provost of EPFL.
His research focuses on the development, analysis, and application of high-order accurate methods for solving complex time-dependent problems described by nonlinear partial differential equations, often requiring high-performance computing. He has made significant contributions to the computational treatment of linear and non-linear wave problems, with recent emphasis on reduced-order modelling and the integration of machine learning and neural networks into traditional numerical methods, with broad scientific and engineering applications.
Prof. Hesthaven has published four monographs and over 175 research papers. He has received multiple awards for his research and teaching, and is an elected member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters, as well as a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM).
Prof. Jan S. Hesthaven has served as Officer of the Division of Computational and Information Sciences since May 2025, for the mandate May 2025 – April 2028 (current and first term, in accordance with the EurASc Bylaws).
