Professor Dr John R. Porter is an internationally recognised agro-ecological scientist with expertise in ecosystem services in agro-ecosystems, including agro-ecology, simulation modelling, and food system ecology—extending to urban food systems. His major contributions lie in multi-disciplinary and collaborative research, combining experimental and modelling approaches to study how arable crops, energy crops, and complex agro-ecosystems respond to environmental variables, particularly climate change. His work has made significant impact in the areas of ecosystem services and global food security.

Prof. Porter has received three international prizes for his research and teaching, along with three additional awards shared with his research group. Notably, from 2011 to 2014, he led the writing of the key chapter on food production systems and food security for the IPCC 5th Assessment Report (Working Group II). He is also a member of the international interdisciplinary working group on post-growth economics and a founding member of the Advanced Research Institute at the University of Montpellier, France.

Within the European Academy of Sciences, Prof. Porter has served in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Division as Officer, from March 2017 – April 2020; as Head of Division from March 2020 – March 2023 (extended to March 2024 due to the COVID-19 pandemic), and Head of Division (Transitional Term) from June 2025 – May 31st, 2026, as appointed by the Presidium for continuity in leadership.
