Prof. Tommaso Calarco is Director of the Institute for Quantum Control at the Peter Grünberg Institute, Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany, and Professor of Physics at the University of Ulm, where he has served since 2007 (tenured 2009). He earned his MSc in Physics from the University of Padua (1994) and completed his PhD at the University of Ferrara (1998), followed by postdoctoral work in the group of P. Zoller at the University of Innsbruck.
He later held research positions at the ECT* Centre and the BEC Centre in Trento, Italy. A pioneer in the field of quantum technologies, Prof. Calarco is internationally recognised for his work on quantum control, and has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and delivered over 100 invited lectures worldwide.
He is one of the principal architects of the Quantum Manifesto (2016), which laid the foundation for the European Commission’s Quantum Flagship initiative, and he currently serves as Chairman of the Quantum Community Network, the key governance body of the initiative.
Prof. Tommaso Calarco has served as Member of the Presidium of the European Academy of Sciences from March 2019 to February 2021, extended until April 2024 due to the COVID-19 pandemic (in accordance with the EurASc Bylaws).
